Why now?

Agriculture is both threatened by and contributes to climate change.

Climate effects including heat waves, droughts, and floods are expected to jeopardize many crop production systems. These weather conditions are also likely to induce other stresses like increased activity of crop pests and diseases, leading to additional yield loss. Meanwhile, agricultural production is itself responsible for significant greenhouse gas emissions; major sources from cropland agriculture include conversion of natural ecosystems to cultivated land, nitrous oxide released because of fertilizer application, and methane release from rice paddies.

Transformation in agriculture

Transformation in agriculture is necessary to increase resilience to climate shocks, decrease emissions, and improve overall agricultural sustainability. Agriculture Technology (AgTech) can play an important role in tackling these urgent climate challenges, but the potential benefits and trade-offs of AgTech for climate action have not been thoroughly explored by decision-makers and the public.

Cross-sector conversations

Triple Helix explores exciting AgTech innovations and examines the societal contexts that determine whether these breakthroughs will have meaningful impact in practice. Fostering these cross-sector conversations and collaborations is essential to creating a more climate-resilient future of agriculture.
